We’ve all seen Instagram photos of a woman sitting in a salon chair, the back of her hair perfectly styled in beautiful curls (how do hair stylists make such perfect curls?!). However, that’s often all we see–the back of someone’s head (which is one of the many reasons a brand shoot is essential for a hairstylist!).
Don’t get me wrong–seeing the finished product is great! But so much more goes into a day in the chair. As a hairstylist, you offer your clients a full experience, and your Instagram feed should show that! Below are my top 5 reasons a professional brand shoot is crucial for a hairstylist.
This blog features brand photos from three brilliant hairstylists: Natasha, Nicky, and Jesse.
How often do we see the face responsible for the gorgeous hair we see as we scroll Instagram? Not often enough! If someone is investing in you and planning on spending hours in your chair, you want them to be as comfortable as possible, right? A brand shoot will provide you with a gallery full of useful photos, including ones of you! Posting plenty of photos that show you doing your thing will help potential clients recognize and build trust in you–before they even meet you!
As a hairstylist, you are more than the finished product (though we do love seeing the beautifully styled hair!). Professional brand photos showcase the different techniques and processes you use to create a special experience for your clients. Behind-the-scenes photos show your personality and give your clients an idea of what it’s like to work with you!
Every business owner wants to stand out, and hairstylists are no different! Having professional brand photos gives you a more cohesive online presence that elevates your brand. It’s difficult to capture a variety of photos when you’re the one responsible for taking them. A brand photographer will take behind-the-scenes photos, detail shots, pictures of the process–and hair photos of course–that will provide your client with a well-rounded idea of what it’s like to sit in your chair!
As a hair stylist, you probably do most of your work at a salon. Having brand photos taken on-location at your salon can be a great way to show your clients where they’ll actually be getting their hair done. However, studio shoots are also a great option! These shoots allow for a more neutral location that places the focus on the hairstylist. In-studio photos allow for a more curated look that incorporates props that highlight your personality!
Quick Tip: If you can’t choose between an on-location or an in-studio shoot, do both! Jesse, owner of Braids & Balayage, invested in my Best Year Yet package (which was a special limited time promotion during my Rise & Thrive week!), which includes quarterly one-hour brand shoots. So far, we’ve done one photoshoot at Evermore Place, but the next one is scheduled to be at her studio! Budgeting for multiple brand shoots throughout the year will provide you with a well-rounded, updated gallery to use on your website and socials.
All businesses cater to a specific clientele, and having professional brand photos will help you connect with your ideal clients! As a brand photographer, I work closely with my clients to uncover the energy behind their business and draw out the parts of their personality that will help them connect with their clients. One great way to help draw in a specific set of clientele is to choose your props carefully!
In a world where it seems like there are endless hairstylists to choose from, it is so important to stand out! Clients expect their hair to look great when they leave a salon, so it’s important for you to show your clients what makes you special–the reason they should choose to sit in your chair instead of any other one! A brand shoot will help any hairstylist “fill in the gap” on your socials so that potential clients can see the whole picture (not just the back of the head! 😉).
